- Bottom LineAcronis True Image's full disk backups, fast performance, and useful extras such as active file protection, make it well worth the cost.
Acronis True Image 2019 is an easy-to-use and robust solution for protecting files and disk images in the cloud. It's not the best value for storage on a per-gigabyte basis, and it's mobile and web apps aren't especially reliable, but the service does offer a ton of useful functionality, including active file protection and full-disk backups. Acronis True Image also lets you back up different file sets on independent schedules and was among the fastest in our upload tests. Accordingly, Acronis True Image is an Editors' Choice online backup service.

Price and Platforms
Acronis offers several different configurations of True Image. Acronis Standard is a one-time cost of $49.99 and grants you all of Acronis' local backup capabilities. The Advanced subscription option costs $49.99 per year and includes that same local backup functionality, as well as 250GB of online cloud storage for one computer. You also get free updates to new versions. You can upgrade the amount of storage to 500GB for an additional $20 and the number of supported computers (three for $79.99 and five for $99.99).
The Premium account option costs $99.99 per year for 1TB of online storage for one computer. You can also upgrade this subscription tier with more computers or more storage. For example, a 5TB plan that supports five computers costs $319.95 per year. A free 30-day trial lets you test the waters before committing to any purchase.
Acronis True Image is on the expensive side for the amount of storage you get, even if you don't opt for the Premium version. Carbonite and Backblaze offer unlimited backup storage for $60 per year, though both services limit licenses to a single computer. IDrive is cheaper, at $69.50 for 2TB of storage that covers an unlimited number of devices.
Acronis True Image is available on Windows (7 and newer), macOS (10.11 and newer), Android (4.1 and later), and iOS (8 and later). You can cancel an account from the web portal by opting out of the auto-renewal payments or by submitting a support ticket.
Security and Privacy
Acronis says it uses end-to-end encryption (AES-256) to protect your files and that it is designed so that the company has zero knowledge about the content of your backups. Users can set up a local encryption key (non-recoverable if you forget it) that is never sent to Acronis for each backup set, as well. Acronis' data centers are protected from a physical security standpoint (fences, biometric access checks, and video surveillance) and can continue operating in the event of a power loss for 48 hours.
Acronis' privacy policy states that it collects personal information you provide (contact and payment information) and your usage data (server logs and device information). This data is used to maintain your account, contact you, and improve and tailor its services, along with other similar purposes. Acronis says it shares this data with vendors and resellers and will give this information to law enforcement officials provided there is a legal basis. These are all standard practices. For reference, Acronis is based in Burlington, Massachusetts, in the US.
Interface and Backups
Acronis' installer is large, at over 500MB, and it takes several minutes to run through its process. Afterward, you need to sign in to your Acronis account or create a new one. True Image's interface is straightforward, with seven flat buttons along the left rail, and large, clearly labeled buttons throughout for various tasks. It's one of the most visually compelling of the services we've tested, despite all its extra features. It uses color sparingly and consistently, which makes the design visually informative.
To set up a backup, you first need to decide whether you want to protect your entire hard drive—the default—or only specific folders and files. Acronis True Image mirrors your complete hard drive in its interface and to select a file or folder for backup, just check a box next to it or at the top of the menu to select everything in the current view.
Next comes the choice of destination. The most obvious option is Acronis Cloud, but you can also use an external drive or a local folder. A few other online backup services, such as IDrive, throw in local backup software as a bonus, but with Acronis, it's a core feature. In fact, the Acronis True Image software for online backup is identical to the True Image local backup software, except for the online option. Note that you cannot specify local and online targets simultaneously, which is something competitor Zoolz BigMind allows.
Once you select a source and target, simply click the green Back Up Now button or delay it until a specified time. Before you run the process, you can also choose a backup schedule, such as Daily, Weekly, Monthly, or Nonstop backup options. With the Nonstop option (also referred to as Continuous), the software detects updates to files and uploads them automatically. You can create as many Nonstop backup tasks as you like, except for those that use the Entire PC option as the source.
In the Advanced options section, you can change the number of file versions stored (the maximum is 20 for all noncontinuous backup schedules), create a local encryption key, and set upload speed and system priority levels for the operation. You can even direct Acronis to store your backup at a particular data center among its worldwide locations.
The Upon Event scheduling option includes trigger choices such as user login, logoff, system shutdown, restart, or startup. You can also set the program to shut down your computer when the backup completes. Note that Acronis True Image integrates with the File Explorer, so you can right-click to add files to your backup or generate sharing links.
Archive and Sync
Acronis' Archive tab analyzes your folders for unnecessary files and offloads them to an external drive or cloud storage. You can set it to run through your files automatically or select files individually. Additionally, like the Backup tab, it lets you encrypt said data or choose which data center to use. These archives are accessible via the File Explorer or through the web interface.
There's also Sync, which keeps a folder accessible and up-to-date across devices. From the desktop application, the Sync tab lets you create a default folder to use with cloud storage or just between a few chosen computers, with the option to add cloud syncing later. The files and folders are also accessible from the web interface as well as from mobile apps. Sync worked as advertised in our testing, but it doesn't save multiple file versions.
Recovering Your Files
Acronis True Image provides simple restore options for each one of the backup tasks you set up. You just select a backup task, navigate to the Restore tab, pick some or all of those files (with point-in-time recovery options available via a dropdown menu), and then hit Continue. From the Advanced Settings tab, you can instruct Acronis to restart your computer after the restore completes, overwrite existing files on your local drive, and control the task's priority for computer resources.
Acronis keeps a respectable 20 versions of files for up to six months, but SOS Online Backup retains unlimited versions forever. IDrive keeps the last 30 versions of files, but it does so forever.
Restoring a full hard drive with Acronis is just as simple, though the process obviously takes longer. It's sort of like Windows's System Restore feature, except your recovery data is in the cloud.
You can recover files via the web client, too. Unfortunately, the software doesn't show an expanded file tree view of your folders. Instead, you have to navigate down through each level of your hard drive folder structure to get to the desired file. This can be a slow process. After you select a folder to restore, Acronis sends you a ZIP archive, as is standard.
Web and Sharing
Acronis' web presence offers impressive capabilities and looks great. However, it is a bit cumbersome to navigate (capabilities are spread out across several different interfaces), and some features did not work in our testing. When you sign in to your account online, the first page you see is your Acronis Account Page, where you can manage your product subscriptions, edit your personal info, control email subscription settings, and access support options. Notably, Acronis True Image does not support two-factor authentication for account sign-ins—something we'd prefer to see as an extra security measure. Imdb half life 2 episode 1.
To actually dive into the web features, you need to hit the Dashboard button in the Product section. The dashboard opens in a new tab called Acronis Data Cloud. The Resources tab on the left allows you to set up and run backup processes remotely. This is an impressive capability, but browsing for files to include in the backup was a very slow process (at least for the first time) and occasionally our device appeared to be offline, even though it was actively running the Acronis software and connected to the internet. We weren't able to actually complete the backup process from the web (the Starting Backup task never ended), which is disappointing. IDrive and BigMind offer similar functionality.
If you click on any of the sidebar items (Backups, Archives, or Syncs), Acronis opens yet another new tab, with access to those collections. Aside from browsing these repositories, you can also share files from this section by hitting the gear icon, and then the Copy URL option. Shares appear in the Sharing section in the top menu and you can cancel sharing at any time. Note that all these links are public, and Acronis does not offer the option to password-protect files the way SpiderOak ONE does. Alternatively, you can share a file from the desktop via the right-click context menu from Windows File Explorer.
Acronis Active Protection
One reason you might want to back up your computer is in case ransomware makes it inaccessible. However, the last thing you want is to back up the ransomware itself. Acronis' Active Protection uses heuristic rules to monitor suspicious behavior occurring with all of your files, not just those in your backup set. This latest version includes protection against cryptomining threats. Typically, these attacks see intruders redirect your computer's resources to mine cryptocurrencies for their own gain.
Acronis True Image 2019 Problems
Acronis spun this functionality off into a standalone product, called Acronis Ransomware Protection, which we tested using a third-party ransomware simulator. When that application appeared to be encrypting files, Acronis' Active Protection popped up a warning box offering to block the action. After we clicked on Block, another dialog asked if we wanted to restore files that the ransomware simulator had managed to encrypt. Acronis did indeed recover said files—we could tell because they were images that displayed correctly. This app also allows you to define exclusions and can automatically recover data affected by a blocked attempt. This ransomware protection product earned a four-star rating in our review.
Notary, ASign, and Other Extras
For extra reassurance that your files remain exactly as they were when you backed them up, Acronis offers its Notary feature. To create a notarized backup, you start a new backup job from the Source page, and choose Files to notarize. Then, select individual files or folders for the treatment and back them up either to local storage or cloud storage. A 'Notarizing…' animation appears with a check mark. After backup, you can verify the file and even see an official-looking certificate with Acronis Notary listed as a signee. Acronis claims this is 'indisputable proof' that no process or person changed the file. We expect the courts will have to decide whether it's admissible evidence, should you use it for legal purposes.
Similar to Notary is ASign, which lets multiple parties digitally sign documents in your cloud storage. To use this feature, just choose Send for Signature in the gear settings icon next to a file entry in the web interface. You add email addresses of people you want to sign the document; they receive an email with a link to a secure page where they confirm their name and write (the best they can with a mouse) in the signature box. When everyone has signed, you receive an email verifying the document. This feature also uses blockchain technology to ensure that the recipient has not altered your document.
Acronis includes other tools such as Clone, which creates a copy of your disk to migrate to another PC; Rescue Media Builder; Try & Decide, which allows you to safely install software you're unsure about; and more tools for system cleanup and recovery. Parallels Access, an extra-cost option, lets you access your PC from a remote mobile device using the Parallels software. There's also a system cleanup tool.
Performance
We tested Acronis True Image's performance with a batch of three separate 1GB file sets over PCMag's fast Ethernet connection (600Mbps up) so that that bandwidth wouldn't be the limiting speed factor. Our test device is a Lenovo Ideapad 320 running Windows 10. We timed how long it took Acronis to upload each file set and then calculated the average time for comparison.
Acronis True Image posted excellent results in our tests, completing the task in an average time of 2:38 (minutes:seconds). IDrive took the top spot in our results with a time of 1:25. Still, Acronis True Image was several times quicker than SOS Online Backup (6:42) and Backblaze (7:47). SpiderOak ONE (19:02) and Livedrive (27:11) rounded out the bottom of our test results. The upload speed of an online backup service is not the most crucial thing to consider, but fast upload times can certainly make the initial run much more palatable.
Mobile Apps
We tested Acronis' mobile app on a Google Pixel running Android 9 and had no issues signing in to our account. The app is available for both Android (4.1 and up) and iOS (8.0 and up). Note that there are currently six different Acronis apps listed on the Google Play Store, but the correct one for personal accounts is called Acronis True Image: Mobile. The app's clean design is reminiscent of the desktop app and we like the consistent color scheme. However, we did encounter some performance issues.
Once you download the correct one and sign in to the service, a simple interface appears that lets you choose what to back up from your phone, including contacts, photos, videos, calendars, and messages. Unlike, IDrive, you cannot back up music files, and we would prefer the ability to select individual files for backup rather than everything of a certain file type. We like that Acronis includes a continuous backup option and that it lets you protect backups with a local encryption key.
After that initial setup, Acronis provides access to your desktop backup sets via a left-swipe menu. Unfortunately, there's no way to organize or filter files within these backup folders or search through them. Also, you can't view any media within the app.
As mentioned, the Acronis app suffers from some reliability issues. For example, a few of the times I tried to delete a backup set, the app got stuck on a loading screen. Even navigating between folders from the backup device via the Access and Restore section caused lag occasionally.
True Online Backup?
There are definite advantages to backing up an entire disk image, which is the default way Acronis True Image operates. The service gets top marks for an intuitive interface, the speed of its backups, its flexible backup preferences, and extra security options like ransomware protection and secure signing. It's on the expensive side and its web and mobile apps have some reliability issues, but the desktop offering is top-notch. It is a PCMag Editors' Choice online backup service, along with IDrive, which is notable for its excellent value.
If you are more interested in only backing up your files to local storage, visit our roundups of local backup services and external hard drives to see your best options.
Bottom Line: Acronis True Image's full disk backups, fast performance, and useful extras such as active file protection, make it well worth the cost.

Acronis True Image 2015 running from Bootable USB or Optical Disc Media
Acronis True Image is a software product produced by Acronis that provides data protection for personal users including, backup, archive, access and recovery for Microsoft, macOS, iOS, and Android operating systems.[4] As disk imaging software, True Image can restore the previously captured image to another disk, replicating the structure and contents to the new disk, also allowing disk cloning and partition resizing, even if the new disk is of a different capacity. The backups are in a proprietary format which saves using a .tib filename format.[5] Acronis was launched in 2003 and in December 2014 claimed to have over 5 million consumer and 500,000 businesses users.[6]

Overview[edit]
Editions[edit]
Several editions of Acronis True Image are available. Acronis True Image Cloud is a subscription-based software plus service offering that allows both local and online backup with unlimited cloud backup, and offers backup for a selection of mobile phones and tablets.[7] Successive versions of Acronis True Image are the local backup editions. Both editions are available at retail outlets.[8]
Until release 9 there were versions of Acronis True Image for personal and business users, with business versions named Acronis True Image Server.[9] Later server backup software was renamed 'Acronis Backup'.[10]
Operation[edit]
Acronis True Image can make two types of backups: file backup, backing up user-specified files and directories, and full system images, which are exact snapshots of an entire disk partition. The program can back up a system hard drive while the OS is running. Acronis True Image can browse the contents of backups and restore them partially or entirely. It can also mount a disk backup as a virtual disk, readable in the same way as any disk drive.
Although backups can be restored when the system is running, a major purpose of backup is to restore the system when it fails to start. Acronis True Image can install Acronis Startup Recovery Manager (ASRM), a computer program that helps restore backups at boot time. Acronis True Image can also create a copy of Acronis Rescue Media, a bootable DVD that contains a copy of Acronis True Image and can restore backups to a computer not bootable in the normal way, so long as a good boot drive (existing or new) is available.
The Acronis True Image Cloud version allows cloud users to also back up their mobile devices. iPhone and Android smartphones are supported, in addition to iPad and Windows tablets. This edition also brings back the 'Try and Decide' option which lets users perform potentially risky actions such as the installation of un-trusted software with the option of returning to the system function before the action if any problems occur.[11]
Acronis True Image Cloud allows multiple devices to be backed up, managed and archived on the Acronis Cloud from the online dashboard.[12]
Supported file systems[edit]
Acronis True Image supports multiple file systems including NTFS, FAT32, ext2, ext3, ext4, HFS+, APFS, ReiserFS, and Linux Swap.[13]
In addition to backing up supported file systems, Acronis True Image provides raw sector backup and restore options independent of file system, thereby supporting a file system that is corrupt, or not supported. This creates a complete image of all sectors on the partition, whether they contain data or not; the image will not be compressed, and will be the same size as the partition.[14]
History[edit]
Acronis began in 2001 as a division of SWsoft[6] and in 2003 became a separate company and continued to release the Acronis True Image software. The True Image name was applied to all platforms from Home to Corporate until 2010, when Acronis business backup software was renamed, with True Image being the home version.[15]

File format[edit]
Acronis True Image guarantees backward compatibility for image files (with the .tib extension) created with a single previous version, that is, images created with an immediate previous version can be successfully restored (older versions may or may not work). Backups are created to be compatible between different editions of Acronis True Image within the same version (Home, Enterprise), e.g., between former Acronis True Image Echo Workstation and Acronis True Image Echo Enterprise Server, or between Linux and Windows versions.[19] Compatibility is not guaranteed between products that are not within the same version.[20] Guaranteed cross-version compatibility is documented.[15]
Format conversion[edit]
VMware Converter by virtualization company VMware supports converting .tib files created by former Acronis True Image Echo 9.1 and 9.5, and Acronis True Image Home 10 and 11 into a virtual machine.[21][22] However, after VMware Converter failed to recognize Acronis True Image 2013 .tibs, VMware said 'unfortunately VMware Converter doesn't support current Acronis True Image versions'.[23]
Acronis True Image has an option to convert backups between its proprietary .tib and Microsoft's VHD backup format,[24] more widely supported, and documented under the Microsoft Open Specification Promise.
Partnerships[edit]
Acronis has licensed custom versions of Acronis True Image to some hard disk manufacturers, including Western Digital's Acronis True Image WD Edition,[25]Intel Data Migration Software to migrate from an existing hard drive to an Intel SSD,[26] and Seagate DiscWizard.[27] Such editions are free to download and use, but only with that manufacturer's hard drives.
