Quake is a first-person shooter PC game released in 1996. It was developed by id Software, the same company that created the Doomfranchise. Today, there are plenty of ways to download Quake for free on the web.

Quake Download Links
The easiest way to download Quake on a PC today is to purchase it on Steam. There are also several websites that host popular Quake ports and mods that you can play for free. Some ports and mods also require the original Quake game files in order to play.
- Best Old Games has the original DOS version, which will require a DOS emulator such as DOSBOX to play.
- QuakeOne.com includes a multiplayer component which uses the original shareware to enable multiplayer mode.
- DarkPlaces is a source port for Quake that features enhancements such as support for high-resolution, real-time shadows rendering, particle effects, and more.
- GLQuake is another source port of Quake built using the OpenGL graphics library developed by id Software.
- EzQuake is a multiplayer source port for Quake that is still updated. It features updated graphics, particle effects, and more.
About the Original Quake
In Quake, players take on the role of a character simply known as the Ranger who has been given a quest to stop an enemy named Quake. Players teleport from present day back to a medieval setting where they must fight monsters and other creates using a variety of different weapons.
Quake includes a single-player campaign and multiplayer game modes. The single-player story campaign contains more than thirty missions split across four episodes. These thirty levels include 26 standard levels and secret stages. There is also one final boss fight.
The multiplayer portion of Quake helped popularize multiplayer shooters and introduced a number of new games and gameplay techniques such as bunny hopping. The multiplayer component also includes the ability to play the single-player campaign cooperatively.
The gameplay in Quake is similar to Doom, and the environments have a gothic look and feel. Quake is considered the successor to the Doom series because it was built with some of the same technology. Battlefront 2 crashes on startup. One enhancement included in Quake over Doom is full 3D rendering of the graphics.
Quake Ports
Similar to Doom and Duke Nukem 3D, Quake has also been ported to a number of game systems including Mac OS, Linux, and a number of home console systems. The source code for Quake was also released, so a number of clones/ports have been created for the PC that are free to download and play. Nonetheless, the copyright to original and official Quake is still maintained, and the game is available for purchase via Steam for a very reasonable price. This makes the need to download the old DOS version or port somewhat unnecessary considering the game costs about the same as a cup of coffee.

However, many of the ports available for Quake enhance various aspects of the original or include additional gameplay options. Quake has also been heavily modded over the years, and there are a number of add-ons that may not work with the Steam version. One such mod to be born from Quake was the original Team Fortress. The Quake modding community is still very active with more than 100 mods available at modddb.com

What is a PAK file?
A PAK file is an archive used by video games such as Quake, Hexen, Crysis, Far Cry, Half-Life, and Exient XGS Engine games. It may include graphics, objects, textures, sounds, and other game data 'packed' into a single file. PAK files are often just a renamed .ZIP file.
PAK files are primarily used by video games but may also be used by other applications such as the Google Chrome web browser. The format for a PAK file used by one game may differ from the PAK format used for a different game. Therefore, you may have to try multiple programs before opening your PAK file.

File used by Simutrans, a free transportation simulation game; contains game object graphics and properties; compiled from a plain text '.dat' data file and a source .PNG image; used for game vehicles, buildings, terrain, and other objects.
To modify Simutrans objects, users typically don't edit the PAK files directly. Instead, they usually download the source DAT and PNG files used to package a PAK file, modify the files, and then re-pack the contents into a new PAK file. PAK files are built using the MakeObj.exe program.

Quake Installation
This process depends if you own a physical copy of Quake or if you downloaded it.
Physical copy
Since there were various releases of Quake around this is not as straightforward as you might have hoped. TODO, someone get guides like these into the wiki: http://mhquake.blogspot.com/p/installing-quake-using-dos-box.html & http://icculus.org/twilight/darkplaces/readme.html#HowToInstallQuake_Windows
Downloaded copy
Verification
You should now have Quake installed.
Let's call the directory where Quake is installed the 'Quake directory' from now on. So for example your Quake directory is 'C:Quake' or '/home/ranger/ games/quake/'. If you do not know where it is, try searching for a file called pak0.pak. It should be inside a directory called id1 which itself is inside your Quake directory.
Inside the Quake directory there might be some files, these will not be needed. However there must be a directory 'id1' and inside that directory must be at least a file called pak0.pak and if you own the full version of Quake also a file called pak1.pak.
Filename | Size | md5sum |
---|---|---|
pak0.pak | 17M (that is 18689235 bytes) | 5906e5998fc3d896ddaf5e6a62e03abb |
pak1.pak | 33M (that is 34257856 bytes) | d76b3e5678f0b64ac74ce5e340e6a685 |
Is that the case? Excellent! If not, go find the pak0.pak and pak1.pak files on your media and create a file structure like that. If you cannot find them, start from the beginning or ask in the forum.
If you want to learn a bit about the directory and file structure of Quake then read on. If not, skip to the next step: Quake Configuration
The file/directory structure
A raw Quake installation consists of two elements:The executable (we call it engine) and the game data. The executable (usually) expects the game data to be in a directory on the same level as itself. In the case of the original game you need to have some .exe file in your Quake directory and a directory called id1. This is the game directory. Inside the id1 directory there are the .pak files. These contain the game data (levels, sounds, models, etc.). Think of them as archives, like ZIP but uncompressed).
By default Quake tries to load game data from the id1 directory when it launches.
Quake Pak 1 File
Some mods do not bother with putting their data into pak files, they instead dump all their files straight into their game directory.
Quake 1 Pak Files Download
This week, I wanted to play to Quake 1. I sought where to download the original game everywhere. I found 4 sites with the game and I downloaded them. They was saying it was the reel version but it wasn't. It was the V.1.06 and in this version, I wasn't able to do any tricks. The only thing I was able to do is the rocket jump so it's hard to do a speedrun with only that :-/
I was wondering if there's a way to download the REEL game with all the physics bugs?
